08/26/2010 - New York, NY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - World No. 1 Rafael Nadal and former top-ranked superstar Roger Federer could meet in the final at the 2010 U.S. Open, which revealed the men's draw on Thursday.
The top-seeded Nadal will open his stay in New York against Russian Teymuraz Gabashvili, while the five-time champion and 2009 runner-up Federer will face Argentine Brian Dabul in the round of 128 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
Nadal could face eighth-seeded fellow Spaniard Fernando Verdasco or 31st- seeded very dangerous Argentine David Nalbandian in the quarterfinals, while his potential semifinal opponent could be fourth-seeded Andy Murray or seventh-seeded Wimbledon runner-up Tomas Berdych. Murray will open up against Slovakian Lukas Lacko, while Berdych will meet capable Frenchman Michael Llodra in round one. Murray was this year's Australian Open runner-up to Federer and lost to the Swiss icon in the 2008 U.S. Open finale. Berdych succumbed to Nadal in last month's Wimbledon title tilt.
The eight-time major titlist Nadal could only face his great rival Federer on the final day of the year's last Grand Slam event. The reigning Wimbledon and French Open champion Nadal still needs a U.S. Open title to complete a career Grand Slam. Federer became only the sixth man to accomplish that feat when he titled at Roland Garros last season.
Nadal has yet to reach a U.S. Open final.
Federer, who owns a men's record 16 major titles, could face two-time French Open runner-up Robin Soderling in the quarters. while his potential semifinal opponents could be third-seeded Novak Djokovic, sixth-seeded Nikolay Davydenko or ninth-seeded American favorite Andy Roddick. Djokovic lost to Federer in the 2007 final here, while Roddick captured his lone Grand Slam title here in New York seven years ago and lost to the amazing Federer in the 2006 final at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The former Aussie Open champion Djokovic will open against fellow Serb Viktor Troicki, while the fifth-seeded Soderling will open against a qualifier, Davydenko will meet American journeyman Michael Russell in round one, and Roddick will take on Frenchman Stephane Robert in the round of 128.
Djokovic and Roddick could square off in the quarters.
Federer lost to Argentine Juan Martin del Potro in last year's five-set men's final, but del Potro will not be on hand to defend his title this year as he continues to recover from right wrist surgery.
The 2010 U.S. Open will commence Monday in Flushing Meadows.

El Duque expected to throw Tuesday
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- New York Mets pitcher Orlando Hernandez, sidelined at spring training because of arthritis in his neck, is expected to resume throwing on Tuesday.
Hernandez received a cortisone shot Thursday after leaving camp and returning to New York to have his neck examined. The 41-year-old right-hander is penciled in as the team's No. 2 starter behind Tom Glavine.
El Duque's health is a major issue for the Mets, who won the NL East in 2007 and came within one victory of the World Series. Their aging and unsettled rotation is a big question mark this year.
MySportsbook.com has the Mets as -110 favorites to repeat as NL East champions odds.
Hernandez went 11-11 with a 4.66 ERA last season, including 9-7 with a 4.09 ERA in 20 starts after the Mets acquired him from Arizona in late May. But he missed the playoffs because of a torn calf muscle.
New York already is without Pedro Martinez, out until at least midseason following rotator cuff surgery. Among those competing for starting jobs are prospects Mike Pelfrey, Philip Humber and Jason Vargas, plus veterans Chan Ho Park, Jorge Sosa and Aaron Sele.
Notes: Mets manager Willie Randolph is excited about two new utility players he could have on his bench: Damion Easley and David Newhan. ''Their value is really all over the place,'' Randolph said. Easley can play anywhere in the infield and could be used as an emergency outfielder, though Randolph said he would prefer to keep the veteran in the infield. Newhan, meanwhile, can play second base, third or any outfield position for the Mets. ''I love versatility,'' Randolph said. ''I love guys that can give me options when I need them to step in.''
